Cross-country runner Mark Andrada (9) ran the second fastest freshman time at the Mt. Carmel Invitational on Sept. 20, with an overall time of 17:37. Andrada finished only behind Travis Kuhlman for the fastest time at this course in Westview freshman history. He finished tenth in a field of 200 runners.

Andrada is looked at as the future of Westview cross-country. While inexperienced, he has posted superb times in each of his first three races and established himself as a top varsity runner.

About 40 seconds remained on the clock in the boys water polo game against Santa Fe Christian in the Poway Invite tournament when Westview drove down the pool in an attempt to get a decent opportunity to score the game-winning goal in a 9-9 game.

A shot sailed just over the net and plunked the top crossbar, sending the ball ricocheting through the air back towards the players. Garrett Rhodes (12) rebounded the ball, sent another shot flying at the goal, and this time placed the ball in the back of the net with 12 seconds left, giving Westview its second victory in as many games in the Poway Invite.

This victory spurred Westview to a 2-0 start in the tournament. While the Wolverines lost their next two games, the team’s impressive start earned it a 7th place finish in a field of 32 teams.

On the opening kick-off of football’s Sept. 19 game against University City, Stephen Sousa (12) received the ball and began to run it back. In a matter of seconds, Westview was up 6-0. Sousa managed to elude several would-be tacklers and outran everyone on the field to reach the end-zone on the first play of the game with a 95-yard kick return.

This quick score ignited Westview’s offense, which scored 59 points against the Centurions. The offense has proven that it is an extremely formidable unit this year.

With the emergence of quarterback Tommy Hansen (11), who stands third in all of San Diego in passing yards with 731, and an all-around star player in Sousa, who is 4th in San Diego in receiving yards with 343, Westview has exploded to a 3-0 start. Sousa and Hansen will likely continue to emerge as stars and remain among the elite in their respective positions.
