Wolverines baseball powers past rival San Marcos in 12-2 victory
May 08, 2009  |  Jon Olivero

Kyle Shaver (12) and Angelo Cianfrocco (12) always seem to hit well when they pitch. At least that’s what the Wolverine fans said April 30 when Shaver’s first inning single drove in lead-off hitter and right-fielder David Manino (11). Shaver’s RBI put the Wolverines up 1-0 against the San Marcos Knights, and from there, the team never looked back, going on to win 12-2.

Shaver pitched well the first two innings, striking out three batters, but ran into some trouble in the 3rd, walking the Knights’ first two hitters.

A passed ball advanced San Marcos’ Cory Dethomas to third base, and a deep sac fly produced by Nick Berkelo scored Dethomas, tying the game at one. Westview fought back a mere half inning later with five runs of their own. Leading off the inning, Cianfrocco quickly fell behind 0-2 but took a couple of pitches, then fouled off a few more, and after seeing eight pitches Cianfrocco had worked the count to a full 3-2. When San Marcos pitcher William Munro missed low, Angelo took first with a walk.

The next batter, Shaver, took an outside pitch deep to right field for his sixth home run of the season putting the team up 3-1. But for the team, the inning was just getting started.

The next batter, 3rd baseman Reed Ressler (12) quickly got on base. Ressler took his lead from first, and broke for second in an attempt to steal. Meanwhile, the pitch got away from the San Marcos catcher, and Ressler slid into third just ahead of the throw Ressler later scored on a sac-fly from shortstop Zack McCoy (11).

Lightning almost struck twice in the same place for the team when catcher Christian Carter (11) doubled off the right field wall, nearly leaving the park where Shaver’s home run had only a few minutes earlier. When the dust cleared, Shaver was back on the mound in the fourth with a 6-1 lead. Shaver didn’t give up another run and picked up the win finishing with 8 Ks.

In the bottom of the fourth, Westview swung the bats again, this time tacking on four more runs to the home side of the scoreboard. Alex Okugawa (10) picked up his first RBI of the day, McCoy picked up his second RBI, and Carter got his third RBI, singling up the middle. Carter wasn’t done yet. In the sixth he got the ball over the fence for his first career home run, and his fourth and fifth RBI’s of the game.

“After I hit that [ball] off the wall I was feeling confident,” Carter said. “I was lucky enough to come up with some guys on base, and I was able to come through with the homer.”

Relief Pitcher Kevin Loudat (12) made an appearance in the sixth inning and kept his 0.00 ERA intact. Closer Carter Prows (11) finished the game for the team giving up one unearned run. The win marked the team’s third victory in a row. With another win at San Marcos May 5 the team’s league record improved to 7-1.

“Our goal is to win league this year,” Carter said. “And with the senior leadership from the guys like Shaver, Ressler and Cianfrocco, we’re looking to get that league banner on the outfield fence.”
