Westview’s All-Decade Teams: 2007-08 Girls Basketball: 28-7
January 22, 2010  |  Brett Rothberger

The girls basketball team came into the 2007-08 season prepared for a spectacular year.

“We knew that it was going to be a big year for us,” former guard Jennifer

Bryant (‘09) said. “We wanted to win CIF’s.”

In the past decade of Westview sports, the girls basketball program has been one of the most consistent Westview has to offer. Stringing together

four straight seasons (2005-2009) with at least 20 wins; the Lady Wolverines have routinely been among the San Diego section’s best. With many strong teams in the past decade, the ‘07-’08 Palomar League champions stand above the rest. The 28-7 Wolverines were led by coach Bob McHeffey, who said the team never let up once the season started.

“We went into the season with pretty high expectations,” McHeffey said. “We were playing well from the beginning. Most of those seniors were building to [that season]. They were focused on this.”

With seven of the team’s players being seniors, three of whom played varsity for four years, the girls basketball

program was in full bloom.

“They had a lot of experience,” McHeffey said. “They had 21 years of experience between those seniors. So they knew what they were doing when they were on the court.”

The Wolverines developed a strong chemistry coming into the season.

“We executed well,” McHeffey said. “We had really good shooters but we also had a good inside game. But really we played good team defense

because they worked well together.”

Bryant also attributes their success

to teamwork.

“[It was] us believing in each other, having faith in each other,” Bryant

said. “It’s a team sport and we all had to believe in each other before we could believe in winning and going all the way.”

While McHeffey credits his team’s success to their experience, there was no denying that Westview’s

all-time leading scorer, Bryant, had a major influence on the team’s success.

“The offense went through her,” McHeffey said.

The Wolverines’ balanced game helped them glide through the regular season schedule, going 9-1 in league play and 8-4 in out-of-league games.

Unfortunately, the Wolverines could not capitalize, dropping the CIF Championship game to archrival Mt. Carmel.
