Alexis Godard (10) sat in the car at 4:30 a.m., sobbing. No one in the car made any motion to get out, knowing that once they did, they would have to say goodbye for seven months. Finally, Godard and her family stepped out of the car and walked to the Navy ship in the dark. Godard’s stepfather’s last words to her were, “Be good and help out your mother while I’m gone.”
